LOS ANGELES - Quelle bling, Beyonce! The R&B diva soared alongside the American
Boychoir while delivering the French lyrics to "Vois Sur Ton Chemin," then sparkled in brilliant jewelry and heavy eye makeup
in singing "Learn To Be Lonely" from "The Phantom of the Opera."
Beyonce was singing three nominated songs in an impressive and diverse quick-change act during
the Oscars show. But she was far from the only music star invading Hollywood's big night.
Counting Crows rocked their "Shrek 2" song "Accidentally In Love." Yo-Yo Ma's cello played an emotional soundtrack to the
Academy's traditional tribute to deceased industry figures.
P. Diddy was a presenter — and was caught on camera in the audience without
a smile on his face when host Chris Rock joked about violence at the hip-hop Source Awards.
Usher walked the red carpet with the same towering woman who was on his arm at the
Grammy Awards. Prince was in the lineup to present an award.
And before the show began, Beyonce's boyfriend, hip-hop star Jay-Z, strolled the backstage halls carrying a glass of champagne. The rapper's concert documentary
last year, "Fade To Black," didn't get an Oscar nod.
Hip-hop stars also got mentions in Rock's opening monologue.
He denigrated movies starring Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who is not known for his acting talents.
And Rock's rift on "If ya can't get a star, wait," included a throwaway line that
might've sailed over the heads of those without hip-hop literacy: "'Alexander' is not 'Gladiator.' Ja Rule's not Tupac, ya
got that?"
Midway through the show, the audience half-expected Beyonce to pop up again when Penelope Cruz presented the nominated song "Al Otro Lado Del Rio."
